The Pod cast
For the pod cast, every student started out by choosing a topic based on the good and bad benefits of certain foods. Then we'd divide into groups and choose one topic to go more into depth with. My topic was chocolate. It was actually more interesting then I expected. Did you know that chocolate was considered a drink of the gods to the Aztecs and Mayans (yes the seeds of the cocoa bean were squished to the point that they could be drunk). Also, one cup of this then very bitter drink, could keep you full for the entire day.
Anyways, chocolate is, sadly, a very broad topic and did not get chosen for our final exhibition. Instead we did the equally interesting and surprising, soda and how it takes effect on the human body. Our job was to create a Pod Cast with interviewees (one scientific and one personally touched by such a horrible drink), interesting facts and sound effects. Then we had to make a small infographic, healthy recipe, and interactive piece for our audience to "play" their way to healthy living.

Interactive/Game: Guess the sugar...
In the photos below, you see 5 different drinks, all with a wide verity of sugar content. For the game you were supposed to guess which can had the greatest and least amounts of sugar in them. Can you guess the sugar content?
|
The types of drinks you are currently seeing are Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Canada Dry Ginger Ale and Arizona Iced Tea.... Most people at the exhibition guessed that either the iced tea or ginger ale had the least amount of sugar. They were all wrong. In reality, the can of Arizona holds the most amount of sugar (24 tsp, 72 g) and ginger ale came in second (13 tsp, 52 g). Though unhealthy in more ways than one, the can of red bull actually holds the least amount of sugar (6.25 tsp, 27 g). People don't realize that almost everything from the name "iced tea" to the label tries to hide their unhealthy nature. For example, the Arizona shows the sugar content for ONE SERVING of tea and there are 3 servings in one of those big cans. But who's gonna care about that? One dollar for diabetes in a can? Sounds awesome!
(If you're interested: Pepsi ( 12 tsp, 48 g); Coca-cola (11 tsp, 44 g); Canada Dry (13 tsp, 52 g); Red Bull (6.25 tsp, 27 g) and Arizona (24 tsp, 72 g) |
Now I know this is a lot to handle... I mean, soda is a delicious source of happiness (seriously it scientifically makes you happy, listen to the Pod Cast). But just remember you don't have to stop drinking it. The most soda a healthy person should be drinking is about one 8 ounce can a day (where the average American drinks about two 8 ounce cans a day). Just drink in moderations and watch out for the sneaky extra sugar contents. Good Luck!
